Chainsets per say may sound a lot more complicated than they usually are. The growth in upgrades and innovations that have been made over recent years has made it more difficult to find that perfect chainset as you are always playing catch up. Nowadays, with there being numerous systems that have come to market, the most important factor is compatibility, but if you follow a few basic principles you shouldn't find it all that hard.
The key rule is never try to mix and match the parts even with the same branded items, as you will end up with a hacked solution which is likely to break whilst your our riding. Keep it simple and but a whole chainset with cranks and chainrings attached, and if you want to be specific ask your bike dealer to explain what the best solution for you is. The key to understanding Chainsets is to understanding how they are put together. See the list below:
Wall Mounting Brackets
Cranks
Known to be the arms of the Chainsets, cranks are usually made using the steel, aluminum or carbon. The latest outfit of the cranksets is the two piece one that features carbon and steel axles. Another important aspect that needs to be kept in mind while considering the Chainsets is the Q factor. For example, the triple cranksets have a Q-factor that is normally wider than the one that accompanies the other formats. Chainrings Road chainsets come in with two formats. Firstly with two chainrings which offers a lightweight option and is great when you ride on mainly flat roads with a small amount of uphill. Secondly triple chainrings which gives you serious low gearing for large mountain climbs, but adds extra weight to the bike.
Bottom Brackets
Most of the cranks fit into the bottom brackets which themselves are attached to the bearing assemblies. This is one of the areas where the compatibility issues may arise as all cranksets have their bottom brackets that are specifically designed for them. One of the commonly known methods of fitting the cranksets to the bottom brackets is the Square taper method. Apart from the square taper though, there are newer techniques on their way in but it is still the preferred design for the budget Chainsets.
The Six Pack Axles
When it comes to the axles, the hexagonal tapered version is known throughout the industry for its fitting and stiffness which still remains unparalleled in any segment. In a recent turn of events, there is news that the axle may be brought to use by Campag and Storck as well. It is presently being used by its makers, Tune. Essentially, it all comes down to how well you understand your Chainsets. If you know what needs to go where, compatibility is something you won't have to worry about. If in doubt see a bike shop or specialist to discuss you options.
