One of the most overlooked pieces of curtain hardware is the brackets that are used to hold up the rod. Most rods that hold up drapery need to be supported by at least three brackets: two at either end and one in the middle to prevent sagging. Depending on the size of the window treatment and the weight of the fabric panels, the number of supports may vary. Because they are often covered, many people do not take the time to think about what kind of brackets are available and how they should look in a room. By carefully selecting the proper curtain brackets and hardware a homeowner can create a more cohesive design in which all the elements of the room complement one another.
When shopping for curtain rod brackets, there are generally four different kinds available. Often the poles used to hang the panels come as part of a complete kit that includes all the necessary mounting hardware. These standard supports are hung onto the wall and offer support from below the pole. For materials that are heavy, the supports may need to be screwed into a wall stud to offer the maximum support. Some may also have room for more than one rod and can be used to hang both a set of full curtains and an inner sheer drapery. Popular mountings are available in wood, metal, and plastic that can be chosen with a finish to complement any decor.
Wall Mounting Brackets
Another kind of curtain bracket is used for return rods. These are pieces of metal from which drapes are hung whose ends curve back into the wall. They are "U" shaped and add a unique look to any window treatment. These supports protrude from the wall and then slide up into the rod and out of sight leaving a neat appearance.
For a very modern, contemporary look many home owners are choosing to hang their window treatments from the ceiling. In order to do this, a metal plate is secured to the ceiling from which hooks or a rail can be suspended. These can also be fitted with several rows of hooks or poles that allow decorators to layer the drapes to achieve a variety of looks. Another good thing about this type is that they can make a room seem like it has higher ceilings than it does. Because the drapes are hung so high, it elongates the height of a window, creating the illusion of increased height.
Finally, some people may want to hang their window treatments on the inside of a window frame. In order to do this, they will have to purchase an escutcheon bracket. These are secured to the inside of the window frame, flush to the edge of the wall. From these supports, a pole is hung, which can support the curtain panels.
Mounting hardware comes in many materials and colors. By choosing curtain hardware that complements the room and the window treatments, homeowners can create a more cohesive look to their rooms.
